Taiwan will resume visa-free entry for visitors from some countries, including the United States and Canada, from next week, as it continues to ease controls imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19. The government gave this information on Monday.

Taiwan kept its entry and quarantine rules in place as large parts of the rest of Asia completely isolated them. However, in June, it reduced the number of isolation days from seven to three.

There have been 5.3 million corona cases in Taiwan since the beginning of the year, most of which are of the Omicron variant. But instead of tightening the restrictions, the government has relaxed what has been called the 'New Taiwan Model'.

Citizens of some countries will be able to enter from next week

Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center said visa-free entry for visitors from the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Europe and diplomatic allies would begin next Monday. The decision has been taken based on the fact that most countries around the world have already reopened their borders and resumed pre-pandemic border measures. There is a need to balance epidemic prevention, economic and social activities and international exchanges.

Quarantine period of three days will be continue

Command center chief Victor Wang told reporters that the three-day quarantine period and the need for a PCR test on arrival would remain in place for some time. Taiwan, which has a well-vaccinated population, has already eliminated the need for negative PCR tests before departure.

Taiwan citizens and foreign residents have never been banned from visiting and re-entering during the pandemic. However, they have to quarantine at home or hotels.

Taiwan was a popular tourist destination for Asian visitors before the pandemic

Before the pandemic, Taiwan was a popular tourist destination for mainly Asian visitors, with Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia being the most important markets.
