Why was Ajinkya Rahane made the captain of KKR instead of Venkatesh Iyer?
Actually, IPL 2025 is going to start from March 22. Ahead of the tournament, Kolkata Knight Riders explained the reason behind making Ajinkya Rahane the captain. KKR CEO Venky Mysore told ESPNcricinfo that he noted that Venkatesh's name was in the discussion, but the team was looking for an experienced player and that's why Rahane was finally selected.
Let us tell you that all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer was bought for Rs 23.75 crore in the IPL 2025 auction and has been appointed as the vice-captain of the team, while Ajinkya Rahane, who was bought for Rs 1.5 crore, was made the captain.
Along with this, the CEO of KKR said that IPL is a very exciting tournament. Clearly, we think very well of Venkatesh Iyer, but at the same time it [captaincy] is quite challenging for a young player. We have seen that many people have a lot of difficulties in handling the captaincy as they move forward. It requires a steady hand and experience, which we think Ajinkya Rahane brings with him.
Mysore further said,
“He has played 185 IPL matches, 200 international matches in different formats. He has captained India, captained Mumbai, captained in the IPL as well. And he has been playing since the first season of the IPL. All this is very important. There should be no surprise in making Rahane the captain.”
