The concept of autonomous cars in the country is still at a nascent stage. In such a situation, an Indian startup has unveiled the country's first self-driving car. Bengaluru-based AI startup Minus Zero has demonstrated the zPod.
The concept is also shaped like a toaster like some of the other autonomous vehicles shown globally. The company claims that this car can drive in all types of conditions and weather thanks to its camera-sensor suite.
Car without steering wheel!
One of the most unique features of the Minus Zero Zpod is that it doesn't have a steering wheel. Instead, it uses a series of strategically placed high-resolution cameras to analyze driving conditions, including traffic.
The startup says that this autonomous car can be extended to Level 5 autonomy, which is the highest a self-driving car can have. The company says that any car with Level 5 autonomous is capable of driving without any human intervention.
How does it work?
The Zpod's camera-sensor suite can capture real-time images of the vehicle's surroundings and share them with the Artificial Intelligence (AI) system embedded in it. The AI used in this helps in avoiding incoming obstacles, navigating the vehicle and controlling its speed. This car works on camera technology instead of sensors. The startup says that these autonomous vehicles could prove to be very useful within an enclosed and controlled area, such as inside a campus.
What is the company's plan?
Minus Zero is reportedly planning to use AI to develop autonomous vehicles suitable for Indian roads. The company is also looking to expand testing of its vehicles in overseas markets including on public roads with stable regulatory norms in the next two years.
It also aims to share its technology with other car makers to further develop Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS) in their vehicles.
