Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida undergoes sinus surgery at a Tokyo hospital on Saturday to treat chronic sinusitis. He told reporters on Friday that he had been diagnosed with chronic sinusitis with polyps.

Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida undergoes a successful surgery for chronic sinusitis

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida underwent sinus surgery at a Tokyo hospital on Saturday to treat chronic sinusitis. He told reporters on Friday that he had been diagnosed with chronic sinusitis with polyps. Kishida said he has since been treated with medication, but decided to have surgery in order to make a full recovery.

Kishida's surgery went well and he returned to his official residence on Saturday evening. A footage from local TV channel TBS Television showed Kishida wearing a mask. In the footage, he is seen thanking the medical staff while leaving the hospital. 

Expected to return to work on monday

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said Prime Minister Kishida was expected to return to work on Monday. However, he will need to stay in the hospital for some time for post-surgery check-up and treatment. Explain that Kishida took office in October 2021 and implemented huge changes in Japan's security and energy policies.

Kishida in the limelight

At the same time, Kishida has faced public support for his handling of a controversy involving his government party's ties to a religious group, the resignation of ministers and top aides following a political funding scandal, gaffes and discriminatory remarks against sexual minorities.
