3, 083 kg of gold seized across the country this year, maximum gold smuggling in Kerala
This year till the month of November 3083 kg gold was seized. The maximum number of cases of gold smuggling came from Kerala. In the calendar year 2021, 2383 kg and in 2020, 2154 kg of gold were seized across the country.
Compared to the last three years, this year (up to the month of November), the highest gold recovery took place. It was informed in Parliament on Monday that 3,083 kg of gold was seized till November this year. The maximum number of cases of gold smuggling came from Kerala. In the calendar year 2021, 2,383 kg and in 2020, 2,154 kg of gold were seized across the country. Whereas, in the year 2019, 3,673 kg of gold was seized. In 2022 (till November), 3,083.61 kg of gold was seized in 3,588 cases.
Know from which states how much gold was recovered
Talking about Kerala, in the year 2022, 690 kg of gold was seized in 948 cases in this state. 587 kg gold was seized in the year 2021 and 406 kg in 2020. Whereas, in the year 2019, 725 kg of gold was seized. Apart from Kerala, this year till November 2022, 484 cases of gold smuggling were reported in Maharashtra, in which 474 kg of gold was seized. 809 cases were reported in Tamil Nadu and 440 kg of gold was seized. In West Bengal, 214 cases were reported and 369 kg of gold was seized.
Finance minister has also expressed concern over the gold smuggling case
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chowdhary said that the Customs field officials and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) keep a constant vigil. Last week, while addressing officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said gold was being smuggled despite customs duty. He had also asked the intelligence officials whether there was any pattern and connection between import and smuggling.
In July, the import duty on gold was increased from 7.5 percent to 12.5 percent to ease pressure on the domestic currency and reduce imports. Gold imports in 2021-22 increased by 33 percent to $ 46.14 billion. Explain that after China, India is the second largest consumer of gold in the world. Minister of State for Finance, Choudhary further said that in the last three years, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has investigated and filed charge sheets in three cases of gold smuggling.
