But which one is better during our air travel and where was it first started. Here we are going to tell you.

What is inflight internet?

The internet system in an airplane is a little different. Which is called inflight internet system. To provide internet facility in an airplane, the help of satellite based Wi-Fi system is taken. In this, antennas are installed above and below the plane. These antennas receive signals from satellites revolving around the earth. To receive these signals, the antenna has to constantly change its position.

Satellite based Wi-Fi system

Inflight internet systems can be of two types. The first is the Air to Ground (ATG) or satellite based Wi-Fi system, which is commonly used to provide internet facility in airplanes. ATG systems use the same cellphone towers that are used on the ground for communication. Wi-Fi speeds with ATG are usually slow, around 3 Mbps. That is, even though the method of providing internet in the airplane is slightly different, the speed is usually the same as what is available on the ground.

Where did the inflight internet service start?

German airline Lufthansa is one of the first airlines to offer inflight internet facility on its flights. Emirates has introduced in-flight Wi-Fi exclusively on its double-decker A380 plane. Emirates currently uses SITA OnAir for connectivity. It gives free internet to all users who sign up for its loyalty program.

Presence of Starlink

At present, Starlink is at the forefront in terms of satellite internet. The special thing about Starlink is that through this, users can enjoy high-speed internet at an altitude of 35000 feet. Starlink is planning to accelerate in-flight internet with low cost and more bandwidth. If this is possible, airlines will be able to provide free internet facility to passengers.

Inflight Internet Service in India

The Indian government had approved the use of inflight internet, but due to the pandemic, work on it could not be done fast. But inflight internet service may start in India in the coming months. These services have become common in international flights, but inflight internet service is not available in Indian airspace due to poor satellite connectivity.
