A landmark law banning race-based discrimination has come into effect in the US city of Seattle. Seattle is the first city outside India where such a law has been implemented. Last month, Indian-origin leader Kshama Sawant introduced this proposal. The motion was approved by a voice vote at the Seattle City Council.

The law banning caste discrimination came into force

Seattle is not only the first US city to ban racial discrimination, but also the first outside South Asia. Sawant said on Monday, 'The law banning caste discrimination has become effective in our city Seattle from today. 

Law banning discrimination on the basis of caste

Seattle's law prohibits race-based discrimination in hiring, tenure, promotion, workplace status or pay. This law prohibits discrimination on the basis of caste in public facilities such as hotels, means of public transport, public rest houses or retail establishments. 

Kshama Sawant further said that this law also prohibits caste discrimination in giving houses on rent, sale of property and mortgaging for loans.
