Neuropsychiatric disorders increased due to Covid, many people got dementia

Cases of corona virus are still being reported all over the world. After getting infected with this virus, people are facing many types of health problems. There has been an increase in the cases of heart disease after Covid. Neurological disorders have also increased due to this epidemic. Now a new study has come out regarding corona, which states that there may be a risk of neuropsychiatric disorder in the population infected with the virus.

According to the study published in the Lancet Psychiatry Journal, respiratory problems have been seen in most people after Covid, but in some cases neuropsychiatric disorders have been seen for a long time after being infected. The study, conducted by researchers from Oxford University, analyzed data from around 1.28 million people infected with Covid-19 between January 20, 2020 and April 13, 2022.

The study looked at data from 14 neurological and psychiatric disorders. It was found that the risk of mood disorders or anxiety in adults was increased after Covid-19. Respiratory problems got better within two to three months, but neuropsychiatric problems persisted for a long time.

Increase in the incidence of dementia in COVID-19-infected

The patients studied by the researchers were divided into three age categories. This included children below the age of 18 years, adults in the 18-64 years category and the elderly above 65 years of age. The study found that among people over 64 years of age infected with Covid-19, 12 percent had respiratory problems and 15 percent had neuro-related problems. Neuropsychiatric disorders were also seen more in the adult age group. Studies have shown that the incidence of insomnia, mental disorders etc. has increased significantly in infected adults.

Research already done

A similar study was conducted last year by the same team from Oxford University, which found that one in three infected people experienced mood disorders, stroke and dementia six months after being COVID positive.

A separate study published last year in the Lancet found that there has been a 28 percent and 26 percent increase in mental illnesses like depression and anxiety globally due to Covid-19. However, for India, the jump in the incidence of both disorders was 35 per cent, which is higher than the global level. This showed that due to Covid in India, the mental health of the people has been affected a lot.
