Russia will formally take over the four regions of Ukraine where it held the referendum. These regions are Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia. Russia claims that residents of these regions have voted to remain under Russian rule.

The Ukrainian government and Western countries have called the referendum illegal. Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend a ceremony in the Kremlin today to formally bring these four regions of Ukraine under Russian purview.

UN Security Council is ready to vote

Media reports said the UN Security Council is set to vote on Friday on a resolution that would condemn Russia for its referendum in four areas under Russian control that are being claimed by Ukraine.

CNN reported that the US-sponsored resolution would ask all countries not to recognize the change in status for the four regions. The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine will be confirmed by a UN resolution, which is also supported by Albania.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said – so-called 'referendums' in Ukraine were held in Russian-occupied territories. They cannot be called true expressions of public opinion. Any decision by Russia to proceed will further jeopardize the prospects of peace.

Residents of these areas voted

As a result, the Kremlin announced that a ceremony would be held to formally begin the process of connecting Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya. These developments follow a recent referendum in which residents of these areas voted.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the occupation of territory by another state as a result of threats or use of force following the Kremlin's announcement on Friday that it would annex four parts of Ukraine is a violation of the United Nations Charter and international law.

Guterres tweeted

Guterres tweeted: 'In this moment of crisis, I must underline my duty as Secretary General to uphold @UNCharter. The acquisition of the territory of a State by threat or use of force by another State is a violation of the Charter and principles of international law.

On Thursday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused Russia of annexing Ukraine's territories, calling it illegal under international law, media reports said. Describing Russia's move as an act of 'territory grab', America's top diplomat said that the US will never recognize Moscow's occupation.

"The Kremlin's sham referendum is a futile attempt to hide yet another land grab in Ukraine," Blinken said in a statement. The Kremlin said Russia would hold a signing ceremony on Friday to include the four territories occupied by Ukraine.
