Russia's most high profile case, Russian Deputy Defense Minister arrested on suspicion of corruption; accused of taking bribe
A Russian court on Wednesday ordered the arrest of Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov on suspicion of corruption. The court said Ivanov conspired to commit the crime through an organized group of third parties. Large amounts of property and services were assumed to win contracts in the Ministry of Defence. Ivanov said he was innocent in the case.
A Russian court on Wednesday ordered the arrest of Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov on suspicion of corruption. Timur was detained on Tuesday by the Federal Security Service (FSB), the successor to the Soviet-era KGB, on charges of taking bribes on a large scale.
This high profile case of corruption has come to light after Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops to Ukraine in February 2002. Moscow's Basmanny District Court has remanded Ivanov to judicial custody till June 23.
Ivanov had conspired to commit the crime
Court footage showed Ivanov, 48, standing with furrowed brows in a glass cage. The court said Ivanov conspired to commit the crime through an organized group of third parties. Large amounts of property and services were assumed to win contracts in the Ministry of Defence. Meanwhile, Ivanov said he is innocent in the case. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to 15 years in prison.
On the other hand, Russia's attacks in Ukraine continue. Six people were injured in a missile attack by Russia on Wednesday morning in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city. Governor Oleh Sinehubov gave this information on Telegram. Three residential buildings, two offices and three non-residential buildings were damaged in the attack.
US Senate approves package of Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan
The US Senate on Tuesday night approved a $95 billion package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan that was pending for months. The House of Representatives has already approved it. This is a relief news for President Joe Biden as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukraine was very disappointed with the delay in receiving the package. Under this package, Ukraine will get the maximum of $61 billion.
Apart from this, $26 billion has been approved for Israel and humanitarian aid in civil conflicts and $8.12 billion has been approved for Taiwan for the security of the Indo-Pacific to deal with China. It was accepted by the Senate with an overwhelming majority of 79 votes against 18.
America angry over Taiwan's package
China on Wednesday criticized the latest package of US military aid to Taiwan, saying such funding is pushing the self-ruled island republic into a dangerous situation. The package includes $8 billion for Taiwan, which is aimed at countering the threat of invasion by China. China claims Taiwan as its own. At the same time, the Taiwanese President has expressed happiness over this package.
