Arms sale approved for $355 million
The DSCA said the US State Department has approved the sale of an estimated $355 million of Harpoon Block II missiles and related equipment to Taiwan to modernize the island's defense capabilities and serve US security interests.
According to DCSA, the State Department also determined to approve the sale of the Block II Sidewinder missiles and related equipment at an estimated cost of US$85.6 million. DCSA said a potential sale of US$665.4 million in surveillance radar program support and equipment was also approved. DCSA also stated that the proposed sale would not alter the basic military balance in the region.
The proposed sale comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Beijing over a controversial visit to Taiwan by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
