Home Minister Gerald Dermanin did not give any details about the deaths in his tweet. The avalanche originated from the Armenset glacier in Contamines-Montjoie in the Haute-Savoie region, about 30 kilometers southwest of Chamonix.

Local France-Bleu radio station reported that the avalanche was one kilometer long and 100 meters wide. The station reported quoting the local province of Thonon that two helicopters had been dispatched to help those trapped in the avalanche. The help of mountain rescue dogs is also being taken.
President Emmanuel Macron expressed his condolences to those who died in the disaster. He said emergency services have been pressed into service to find people trapped in the snow. Earlier in 2014, two brothers were killed in an avalanche on the same glacier. Both the brothers were experienced mountaineers.
