China has put obstacles in the way of declaring Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Sajid Mir, the main handler of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, as an international terrorist. The US had presented a resolution to the United Nations to designate Mir as a global terrorist. Which was supported by India, but China banned it. The US had moved a resolution under the UN Security Council's 1267 Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee to blacklist Mir as a global terrorist and India backed it. But on Thursday, China banned it.

Had Mir been declared a global terrorist, all his assets in the world would have been confiscated and his travel to and from member countries and arms would have been banned. Mir's name is in the list of India's most wanted terrorists. The US has announced a $5 million reward against him for his role in the Mumbai terror attack. In June last year, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison in Pakistan in a terror funding case. However, the Pakistan government had said that Mir was dead, which the western countries do not trust.
