Iranian Chess Player: Iranian chess player got citizenship of Spain, was threatened for not wearing hijab

Sarasadat has been granted Spanish citizenship. The Spanish government gave this information on 27 July. Sara Khadem took part in the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships in Kazakhstan without a hijab, which is mandatory under Iran's strict Islamic dress code. Because of Sara Khadem's doing this, an arrest warrant was issued against her in Iran.

Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, popularly known as Sarasadat, an Iranian female chess player, has got Spanish citizenship. Let us tell you that at the end of December, Sara took part in a competition in Kazakhstan without a hijab, which was strongly opposed by the Iranian government. During that time Sara Khadem had gone to Spain in January to avoid protests.

Recently Sarasadat has been granted Spanish citizenship. The Spanish government gave this information on 27 July (Thursday). Sarasadat competed in the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships in Kazakhstan without a hijab, which is mandatory under Iran's strict Islamic dress code.

Sarasadat's doing so resulted in an arrest warrant being issued against her at her home in Iran.

The law mandating compulsory hijab wearing became a flashpoint during the unrest in Iran when Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish woman, died in the custody of morality police in mid-September.
 

Sarasadat has no regrets for her actions

The 26-year-old told news agency Reuters she did not regret her actions in supporting the protest movement against her country's clerical leadership. Meanwhile, Spain's official gazette said the cabinet on July 25 (Tuesday) approved Khadem's citizenship "taking into account the special circumstances" of his case.
