US lawmaker Ro Khanna has said that Washington wants India to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) plus as the sixth member. If this happens, India's inclination can move towards America. Khanna, a Democrat from California, said that NATO allies get quick approval on defense agreements. America has made such agreements with Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Israel and South Africa.

Khanna said, "I have made efforts towards joining India as the sixth member of NATO Plus. This will strengthen the defense partnership between the two countries. I started this two years ago and will continue to do so. It is expected that the bill related to this will also be passed in the Senate. The US House of Representatives on July 14 passed a resolution to amend the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) with an overwhelming majority.

The resolution proposes to strengthen defense ties between India and the US. Khanna himself has introduced the motion in Parliament. The US lawmaker said that it is in America's interest to provide relief to India from the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (KATSA) and this will deepen the defense partnership between the two countries. The US imposes sanctions under CATSA against countries with major defense agreements with Russia. The Indian-origin MP said, 'America wants a strong defense and strategic partnership with India. Both are democratic countries. With the rise of China and Russia, the partnership between the two countries becomes very important.
