Military tensions are rising in the sensitive Taiwan Strait. The island has been asked to be on alert this year for the 'sudden entry' of the Chinese military in areas close to Taiwan. Taiwan's Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng gave this warning on Monday.
Taiwan army on alert mode
China has stepped up its military activities around Taiwan in recent years. This includes almost daily air force incursions into the island's air defense zone. However, Taiwan has not yet reported any incident of Chinese military entering its immediate territory. Explain that the area of 24 nautical miles i.e. about 44.4 km from the coast of Taiwan comes under the territory of Taiwan.
China can make excuses to enter sea and airspace
Chiu said the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) may find pretexts to enter areas close to Taiwan's air and sea airspace. Indeed, the island has increased its military exchanges with the United States. This has irritated China. Chiu said this while answering the questions of an MP in Parliament.
He said the PLA could make a "sudden entry" into Taiwan's territory and move closer to its territory. Especially for this year he has made these comments which means he is making such preparations. If they really have to use force, they will use force.
Taiwan has already made it clear that it will exercise its right of self-defense and retaliate if Chinese armed forces enter its territory. China claims self-ruled Taiwan as its own.
China has said that if needed it can use force to bring the island under Chinese control. Taiwan rejects China's claims to sovereignty and says only its people can decide their own future.
