The teacher from Haryana started beekeeping with his wife; Earning 40 lakh rupees annually

50 years old Jagpal says that after doing B.Ed, I started teaching in a school. The income was also getting good. But, I kept thinking about doing something different. Meanwhile, one of my relatives told me about beekeeping. I liked his idea, but the difficulty was how to start it. People were not so aware then, nor was social media like today.

Started Honey Business with 30 Boxes

Jagpal started reading books to gather information about beekeeping and then gathered a little information from beekeepers. After this, in 2001, he started a honey business with 30 boxes while working. He says," I started selling honey in the market by placing honey in the box. It started earning well. Then my wife also aided in the business and we started thinking about taking it to a higher level."

Started own processing unit after training

Jagpal says ,"Earlier we used to give our products to a company that makes honey. They used to make it their brand and sell it at a higher price. In such a situation, we used to get very low price for our product. We thought that we would be branding our product ourselves. In 2014, I quit my job and started focusing solely on business. In 2016 my wife Mukesh took beekeeping training from Krishi Vigyan Kendra and we started processing. We set up our own processing units and started branding our products. Jagpal's wife does all the work from taking the honey from the box to its processing and packing. Then they sell it in the market."

Right now Jagpal is preparing 10 types of honey. These include varieties like basil honey, neem honey, celery honey, berries honey, mustard honey, coriander honey. They say that to make Tulsi honey, bee boxes are kept in the Tulsi orchard. Where bees feed on basil. The honey that is found thereafter has the qualities of basil. Similarly, second type of honey is also prepared.

Did marketing by creating WhatsApp group

Jagpal has formed a WhatsApp group for the marketing of his product. Whoever wants honey sends a message to the group. The product is then shipped via courier to its address. Along with this, many people also contact them through social media. Jagpal says that around 200 orders come every month.Currently they are supplying products in many states including Delhi, Rajasthan, UP. Through this business, they have also given employment to 20 people.

How honey is made

First of all, bees suck the nectar from flowers. This nectar is converted into honey in the bees' stomach. Initially there is a high amount of water in it, but at night the bees separate the water from the honey with the help of their feathers.

This process of producing honey lasts for 7-8 consecutive days. Such honey is called raw honey. After this the honey is kept for cooking. In about 12 to 15 days, honey is cooked and prepared, which is taken out of the box. This honey can be used directly.

What things are needed

For this, open space is required, where the boxes can be kept for rearing bees.

Boxes made of wood and forged for mouth safety.

Advanced variety of bees.

Hand gloves and fumigation.

If you keep bees in 200 to 300 boxes, then you need 4 to 5 thousand square feet of land. Among the four species of bee, the Italian bee is considered the best.

How to make profit

Business of honey can be started with 10 boxes. It will cost about 30 thousand rupees. Later their number can be increased. Up to four kilos of honey can be obtained from a box in a month, which can be sold in the market at the rate of 200 to 300 rupees per kg. With this, if we start processing it, then it can also be sold easily at the rate of 500 rupees per kg. Jagpal says that once the box is installed, it only costs maintenance, which is not very much. The availability of flowers is most important for preparing honey. If we keep getting flowers, then they can earn from it continuously year after year.
