When you are buying gold it is very important to ensure whether the gold is hallmarked or not. As per the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website, it is necessary to obtain an authentic bill/invoice for hallmarked gold from the retailer/jeweller. This is necessary for any dispute/abuse or grievance redressal.
Why the is bill necessary?
According to the BIS website, the bill/invoice issued by the jeweler/retailer is required to contain the details of hallmarked items. The bill or invoice for the sale of hallmarked precious metal articles should mention the details of each item, the net weight of the gold, carats and the hallmarking fee. Suppose if the gold chain has stones, the jeweler has to separately mention the cost and weight of the stones in the invoice.
What to do If you doubt the quality of gold
In case a consumer has doubts about the purity of gold, he can make a complaint by visiting any BIS recognised Hallmarking (A&H) centre. The customer has to pay Rs 200 as the test fee. The list of hallmarking centers affiliated to BIS is available on the BIS website. As per Section 49 of the BIS Rules, 2018, in case of non-compliance with the standards, a fine of two times the difference amount shall be payable to the buyer or customer.
