• Indian-origin Rishi Sunak has got the support of 142 members of Parliament. Whereas to contest for the post of Prime Minister, it is necessary to have the support of a minimum of 100 members. Let us tell you that after the resignation of Liz Truss, Tory members proposed to hold re-election for the post of PM in Britain.

Confirming his candidacy, Sunak, former UK finance minister, said in a statement, 'I want to fix the country's economy. Want to unite my party and work for my country.

Boris Johnson, who returned from vacation, surprised everyone and refused to join the race for the post of PM. He said that he would not be able to lead. After this, everyone was surprised. At the same time, with this decision of Johnson, Sunak's claim became very strong.

Let us tell you that 58-year-old Boris Johnson said that he could have become the Prime Minister, but he could not succeed in persuading Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordent in the interest of the nation. He could not unite the two of them. "I admit I have a lot to offer, but I think it's not the right time," Johnson said late Sunday.

After Boris Johnson announced not to contest, Rishi Sunak praised him. Sunak praised the former prime minister for leading the country through difficult challenges including Brexit, the COVID vaccine rollout and the war in Ukraine.

"Although Johnson has decided not to run for PM again, I hope he continues to contribute to public life at home and abroad," Sunak said.

If Mordant does not get the support of 100 MPs by 2 pm local time, Rishi Sunak will become prime minister without contesting an election.
