UN chief urges people to stay away from violence on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday urged people to abstain from violence while following the principles of ahimsa (non-violence) on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's 153rd birth anniversary. Especially the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi is celebrated as International Day of Non-Violence.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday urged people to abstain from violence while following the principles of ahimsa (non-violence) on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's 153rd birth anniversary. Notably, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi is celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence.

The UN chief tweeted, "On International Day of Nonviolence, we celebrate Mahatma Gandhi's birthday and the values ​​of peace, respect and the essential dignity shared by all." Gandhi was a great leader of India

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Gandhiji, a great leader of India who gave his life for the country, was born on 2 October 1869. This day is celebrated with great joy every year to remember and pay tribute to the Father of the Nation as well as his values, principles and philosophy. In June 2007, the United Nations General Assembly marked 2 October as the International Day of Nonviolence. 

Gandhi was one of the most important freedom fighters

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was one of the most important freedom fighters of India. He led the non-violence movement against the British. He studied law and then went to South Africa. After returning to India, he joined the Indian National Congress. She fought for women's rights and caste discrimination. He also led nationwide campaigns for farmers, laborers and farmers. 

21 years after Gandhi's death, Great Britain issued a postage stamp to honor him. Gandhi never received the Nobel Peace Prize, but was nominated 5 times. Gandhi is the first and only Indian to be awarded the title of 'Time Person of the Year' in 1930. Many world leaders like the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela and John Lennon consider Gandhi a role model. This is because he fought for independence from the British, but he also fought against social issues like caste discrimination, women's rights etc.
