Boat accidents happen frequently in Bangladesh due to overloading

Boat accidents have become more common in Bangladesh due to easing of safety standards and overloading. Bangladesh is situated on the lower course of two major rivers, the Ganges and the Brahmaputra. This country is surrounded by a total of 230 rivers.

Navy officials have said that more than 95 percent of Bangladesh's hundreds of thousands of small and medium-sized boats do not meet minimum safety standards. Millions of people in Bangladesh depend on boats and ferries to travel to the capital or major cities of the delta country.

Many people died due to boat capsizing last year as well

In December last year, around 37 people drowned when a passenger ferry collided with a cargo ship and sank. At the same time, in November last year, at least 85 people were drowned when an overloaded triple-decker boat capsized near Bhola Island in the south of the country. A week later another boat sank, killing 46 people. So far this year, dozens of people have died in several small boat accidents in Bangladesh.
