Black door number 10 and a cat, both of them are located at a very special place in Britain. Rishi Sunak is also going to have a special relationship with him. Rishi Sunak will now live inside the black door where many British Prime Ministers have come and gone from 1735 till today. This is the place which is considered as the most important political building.

The important decisions were taken behind the black door

All the decisions of the First and Second World Wars were taken behind this black door. Decisions to build the British atomic bomb and deal with the economic crises after the Great Depression in 1929 were also taken behind this dark door. Now you must be thinking that why the number 10 is written on the black door?

The number of homes on 10 Downing Street we see in pictures today was very different in the past. Earlier houses were not known by numbers but by the names of their occupants. What we call Downing Street today was named by Sir George Downing, 1st Baronet. Some of the most famous politicians in modern history have lived and worked here, including Robert Walpole, Pitt the Younger, Benjamin Disraeli, William Gladstone, David Lloyd George, Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. 

Why is the 10 Downing Street is black in color?

You will be surprised to know but the front side of 10 Downing Street was yellow. London's 10 Downing Street was damaged after a bomb fell on the Horse Guards Parade on 20 February 1944. After which it had to be repaired again. In fact, the stones you see next to the black door were yellow in colour.

10 Downing Street has been the residence of the Prime Minister of Britain. Apart from this, there is also the official office and it is the place where the leaders of Britain host world personalities and guests of His Majesty the King. 

Why there is a cat in 10 Downing Street? 

You must have often seen in the pictures that whenever the Prime Minister of Britain meets the PM of another country, a cat keeps hovering around. This cat is no ordinary cat. Rather 10 Downing Street lives with the prime minister. The cat is named Larry and serves as the chief mouser in the Cabinet Office of the United Kingdom at 10 Downing Street. Larry was appointed on 15 February 2011

How Larry became a member of 10 Downing Street

Larry was recruited in 2011 by the then British Prime Minister David Cameron. Let us tell you that Larry was earlier a stray animal and was adopted from Battersea Dogs in London. Larry is now famous as Britain's mouse-catcher in chief. 

Larry was recruited to deal with the rats running in the official residence of the British leader at the time. He was later given the title of Chief Mouser for the Cabinet Office. According to the 10 Downing Street website, Larry also has certain duties that he must perform. This includes greeting guests in the house, conducting security inspections.
