US authorities arrested two men on Monday accused of helping China run a secret police station in Manhattan's Chinatown. The arrested persons have been identified as Lu Jianwang (61) and Chen Jinping (59). Both of them are residents of New York.
Jianwang and Jinping worked for the Chinese Government
American officials have taken this action after news that dissidents living in America are being targeted by China. Jianwang and Jinping are accused of acting as agents of the Chinese government as part of a conspiracy. He did not give any information to the US authorities in this regard and thus obstructed justice. They are both expected to appear in federal court in Brooklyn later.
China is operating secret police posts around the world
Brooklyn's top federal prosecutor said that we cannot tolerate China's harassment of pro-democracy activists. China is believed to be operating secret police checkpoints in countries around the world, Justice Department officials said, adding that these arrests are the first of their kind anywhere in the world.
Michael Driscoll, head of New York's FBI Field Office, said in this case that this is a gross violation of our national sovereignty. US law enforcement officials said at no point did the men register with the Justice Department as agents of any foreign Government.
