China's role in the Russia-Ukraine war has so far been to stay away from the dispute and avoid criticizing Russia in any way, but now China has expressed its desire that the two countries hold peace talks and try to resolve the dispute . Senior Chinese diplomat Qin Gang had a phone conversation with a Ukrainian Foreign Ministry official on Thursday.

China suggested 12 principles of peace

China has urged both sides to agree to a gradual de-escalation leading to a comprehensive ceasefire as described in its 12-point paper on a "political solution to the Ukraine crisis". The research paper called for the safety of citizens and respect for each other's sovereignty.

Both the countries have not shown much enthusiasm on this plan of China. According to a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement, Qin told Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba that China hopes all sides will remain calm, reasonable and restrained and resume peace talks soon.

Xi Jinping will hold talks with both Putin and Zelensky

Chinese President Xi Jinping may meet Russian Vladimir Putin next week. It is expected that he will also hold a virtual meeting with President Zelensky of Ukraine. Analysts say there is little hope that China will be able to persuade Russia and Ukraine to hold talks, yet some analysts believe Xi may be playing a behind-the-scenes role to accelerate the talks process.

Let us tell you that China has refrained from helping Russia directly, but many Chinese companies have been accused of providing military equipment to Russia. It is believed that this is not possible without the tacit consent of the Chinese government.
