Earthquake in Taiwan: Strong earthquake hits southeastern part of Taiwan, many houses damaged; tsunami warning issued

Strong earthquake tremors were felt in the southeastern part of Taiwan on Sunday. The magnitude of the earthquake was measured at 6.8 on the Richter scale. Taiwan's Meteorological Department said the epicenter of the quake was in Taitung County, where a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck on Saturday evening.

Strong earthquake tremors were felt in the southeast of Taiwan on Sunday. The magnitude of the earthquake was measured at 6.8 on the Richter scale. Taiwan's Meteorological Department said the epicenter of the quake was in Taitung County, where a 6.4-magnitude quake hit Saturday evening. Several houses were damaged by the earthquake and a tsunami warning has been issued.

Many houses damaged by the earthquake

U.S. Geological Survey said that the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km. According to local media, several buildings collapsed due to the earthquake, under which many people are buried and efforts are being made to rescue them. Taiwan Railways said three trains derailed after a portion of the platform collapsed at Dongli Station in eastern Taiwan. However, about 20 passengers aboard were evacuated. 

The Meteorological Bureau said the tremors could be felt across Taiwan. He said the quake shook buildings in the capital Taipei but did not have much effect. However, a warning has been issued.

Tsunami warning issued

The US Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning in Taiwan after the earthquake. He said a tsunami could occur within 300 km of the quake's epicenter along the Taiwan coast. Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a 1-metre tsunami warning for part of Okinawa Prefecture after the quake.

Let us tell you that there is always a risk of earthquake in Taiwan. The 2016 earthquake in Taiwan killed more than 100 people. Whereas in 1999 a 7.3-magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,000 people.
