The health ministry of this South African country announced over the weekend that 698 children have died since the outbreak of measles began in April.
The South African country's health ministry announced over the weekend that 698 children have died since the measles outbreak began in April. Of these, 37 deaths occurred in a single day on 1 September. The Health Ministry has said that till September 4, 6,291 deaths have been registered here.
The latest figures released are nearly four times the number of deaths announced two weeks ago, when the ministry said 157 children had died of the disease. Most of these children were not vaccinated because of their family's religious beliefs.
Dr. Johannes Marisa said on Monday that the government should accelerate the ongoing mass vaccination campaign and launch awareness programs to spread awareness, especially among anti-vaccination religious groups.
"Education alone is not enough when children are not vaccinated, but the government should also consider punitive measures so that no one can say no to vaccinating children," Marissa said. Marissa also urged the government to consider a law making vaccination mandatory against deadly diseases like measles.
It is to be known that the government has started mass vaccination campaign for children in the age group of 6 months to 15 years here on a large scale.
