Since 1980, bad weather in Europe killed about 2 lakh people, economic loss of more than 56 thousand crores
The European Environment Agency said on Wednesday that about 195,000 people have died due to severe weather conditions in Europe. At the same time, since 1980, there has also been an economic loss of more than 56 thousand crore rupees.
The European Environment Agency said on Wednesday that almost 195,000 people have died due to the weather conditions in Europe. Since 1980, there has been an economic loss of more than 56 thousand crore rupees.
Millions of people died due to bad weather
The EAA said in its report that between 1980 and 2021, about 195,000 people died due to floods, storms, heat and cold waves, forest fires and landslides.
The EAA said only 170 billion, or 30 percent, of 560 billion euros ($605 billion) in losses was insured. The EAA launched a new online portal collating recent data on weather impacts.
Heatwave is responsible for the death
EAA expert Aleksandra Kazmirczak told AFP that to prevent further damage, we need to move immediately from reacting to weather events to ... actively preparing for them.
As per the latest data, heatwave is responsible for 81 percent of the deaths and 15 percent of the financial losses.
The EAA said Europe needed to take measures to protect its aging population, with the elderly being particularly vulnerable to extreme heat.
Repeated heatwaves have predicted more deaths than usual in Europe in the summer of 2022, but the 2022 deaths were not included in the figures published on Wednesday.

53000 deaths occurred in July 2022
The EAA said there were 53,000 more deaths in July 2022 than the monthly average in 2016-2019, although not all of those deaths were directly attributed to the heat.
Spain recorded more than 4,600 deaths linked to extreme heat in June, July and August. Climate modeling predicts longer, more intense and more frequent heatwaves.
In February 2022, the EAA stated that the weather killed 142,000 people and caused 510 billion euros in damage for the period 1980–2020.
The increase in figures released on Wednesday is partly due to the fact that floods in Germany and Belgium in 2021 caused an economic loss of about 50 billion euros.
