China's population fell by 850,000 last year. Experts say that family-centric policies should be made to boost the birth rate.

'Giving exemption on the basis of family unit will increase the birth rate'

Wang Pei'an, deputy director of the China Family Planning Association, said on Saturday that tax exemptions should be increased based on the family unit, which can encourage people to increase the birth rate.

At the Third China and Development Forum in Beijing, Wang said that people should be given facilities and exemptions in terms of employment, medical care, social security and housing that could encourage people to have families. 

Effect on population due to implementation of one child policy

The government imposed a one-child policy on families in most parts of the country between 1980 and 2015, but now officials are trying to increase the birth rate. For this the authorities are luring the people with more supportive measures.

According to a survey, the 2010 population decreased by 0.48 percent, and in 2020 the average Chinese household was limited to 2.62 people. At the same time, a 2021 survey found that according to women born in the 1990s, the number of children should be 1.54 at this time, but the number of children born in the 2000s was only 1.19.

Average age of reproduction is 27.2 years

The percentage of women who had never had children increased from 6.1% in 2015 to nearly 10% in 2020. Wang said, "In China, the level of maternity protection is still very low. It will be extremely difficult to boost marriage, child and fertility levels.

According to reports, the average age of marriage of a woman in 1980 was 22 years which has increased to 26.3 in 2020. At the same time, the age of giving birth to the first child has become 27.2 years.
