The increase in the cases of covid in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) has dealt a big blow to the Chinese authorities. The annual development goals have not been met due to the increase in covid cases here. The impact of the increase in Covid cases is being seen on the already slowing Chinese economy. The Financial Post reported that President Xi Jinping's strict zero covid policy has forced major cities in TAR to conduct large-scale testing. Due to which the authorities have closed indoor entertainment, cultural and sports venues.
Lockdown in many areas of Tibet
In addition, TAR officials have imposed a lockdown in major cities in the region, including Lhasa, Shigatse, Shannan, Nagri, Nagchun, Nyingchi and Chamdo, among others. For this reason tourism was affected and revenue decreased. However, the increase in COVID-19 cases in Tibet is mainly due to tourists coming from China. This has seen a slowdown in the Chinese economy, unemployment and slow manufacturing.
Corona impact on China's development goals
Meanwhile, atrocities against people inside Tibet reflect the brutality of Chinese police and other officials on Chinese social media platforms – Weibo, We Chat, TikTok and other digital apps. China has skipped official development targets due to an increase in COVID cases in Chinese cities and several regions of the TAR, as property sector revenues declined by 31.4 percent in 2022, putting pressure on GDP.
Chinese rule havoc in Tibet
China's Covid mismanagement and stringent measures under its so-called 'Zero Covid Policy' have wreaked havoc in Tibet. China was at the center of the outbreak of COVID-19 in the world. Lakhs of people have died across the country in the last 2 years. But when the whole of China and many parts of the world were battling the corona virus crisis, only one case was reported in Tibet at the beginning of the epidemic.
