Twitter is becoming Anti-LGBTQ after Elon Musk's takeover - Amnesty International USA Survey

A Twitter survey has revealed that harassment of LGBTQ+ activists has intensified since October 2022. This is the year that Elon Musk, the world's richest man, acquired Twitter and took over as CEO.

Big revelations in the report

Surveys by Amnesty International USA (AIUSA), GLAAD and the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) have revealed that Twitter under Elon Musk has failed to protect LGBTQ+ organizations and individuals from online violence and abuse.

lGBTQ+ activists have been facing a lot of harassment since the Twitter acquisition. Nearly 60 percent of respondents reported that they have received abusive and hateful messages on Twitter since Musk took over as CEO. Whereas, another 40 per cent believe that they have faced harassment in the past as well.

'Common Digital Town Square'

‌Michael Kleinman, senior director of technology and human rights at Amnesty International USA, said that Twitter considers itself a 'common digital town square', but it is in this town square that LGBTQ+ people are increasingly being subjected to harassment. . Kleinman said that it is quite disheartening that the problem of hateful and abusive messages on Twitter is getting worse by the day.

‌No action taken on reported content

Respondents who tried to report abuse to Twitter said that Twitter took no action to reduce or remove the reported content. Let us tell you that GLAAD's Social Media Safety Index, released in July, gave Twitter a score of 48 out of a possible 100, and described Twitter as an unsafe place for LGBTQ+ people.

Eight out of nine LGBTQ+ activists surveyed said that abusive messages and harassment on Twitter affect them significantly. 65 percent of people believe that Twitter receives more hateful and abusive messages than other social media.
