BJP government started 'Operation Lotus', says CM Narayanasamy in Puducherry

With the resignation of Congress MLA John Kumar in Puducherry, the number of Congress members including the Speaker in the Legislative Assembly has been reduced to 10, while its ally DMK has three members and an independent member is also supporting Narayanasamy's government. 

Puducherry : In Puducherry, the Congress government has gone into a minority with two resignations in two days. On the other hand, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy said that he was confident that the two leaders would remain in the party and said that 'our government is not in the minority'. Narayanasamy said that the resignations of Malladi Krishna Rao and John Kumar have not yet been accepted and the Speaker is still considering them. He accused the BJP of another 'Operation Lotus'. The campaign has been named as 'Operation Lotus' by the Opposition, allegedly campaigning by the BJP to topple the government and turn legislators on its side.

Congress MLA John Kumar resigned from the membership of the assembly on Tuesday. With this, in the last one month, he has become the fourth MLA who has left the post of MLA. The Congress-led coalition now has 14 MLAs in the current House.

With the resignation of Kumar, the number of Congress members, including the Speaker, has been reduced to 10 members in the Assembly, while its ally DMK has three members and an independent member is also supporting Narayansamy's government. Based on the number of effective members in the house, the majority figure is 15. The election of Puducherry assembly is expected to be held in April as the term of the current assembly ends on 21 June 2021.

Narayanasamy said he was confident that the two leaders would remain in the party, saying that "our government is not in minority," Narayanasamy said, adding that the resignations of Malladi Krishna Rao and John Kumar have not been accepted so far and the speaker is still considering them.

What is the situation in Puducherry now?
The resignation of the Congress MLA took place a day before party leader Rahul Gandhi came to launch the campaign. After Kumar's resignation, the Congress has 10 seats in the Assembly on Tuesday, three in the DMK, seven in the All India NR Congress, four in the AIADMK, three in the BJP (all nominated and voting rights) and one independent MLA.
