Ambassador Dr. Sahil Singh Accelerates Global Malnutrition Solutions Through Spirulina in Support of the UN Sustainable Development Agenda
The Intergovernmental Institution for the Use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition (IIMSAM) Observer to United Nations Economic and Social Council today announced a renewed global strategy aimed at accelerating international action against malnutrition through sustainable, science-based nutrition solutions. The initiative includes a high-impact global campaign promoting spirulina and expanded engagement across multiple countries, reinforcing IIMSAM IGO’s mandate to support food security and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).
At the center of this renewed approach is a comprehensive global campaign advocating spirulina as a natural, nutrient-rich, and environmentally sustainable food source. High in protein, essential micronutrients, and antioxidants, spirulina offers a proven solution to address undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and food insecurity—particularly among children, women, and vulnerable communities affected by humanitarian and climate-related challenges.
Strategic Focus Areas
Under the renewed strategy, IIMSAM IGO will prioritize:
* Scaling up spirulina-based nutrition interventions in partnership with governments and development actors
* Strengthening multi-stakeholder partnerships with UN agencies, NGOs, academic institutions, and the private sector
* Expanding policy advocacy, awareness, and technical capacity-building aligned with national development frameworks
* Supporting local production models and integration of spirulina into national nutrition and public health programs
Global Expansion and Country Engagement
As part of its expanded global engagement, IIMSAM IGO is preparing for upcoming missions and programmatic initiatives in several countries, including India, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Nepal, and Uganda, among others. These efforts will focus on tailored technical cooperation, policy dialogue, and partnership development, supporting national and regional efforts to combat malnutrition while advancing the UNSDGs.
Leadership and Strategic Partnerships
The renewed strategy reflects the leadership and strategic vision of Dr. Sahil Singh, Ambassador for Strategic Partnerships and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), whose work has been central to strengthening international collaboration and aligning IIMSAM IGO’s mission with the global development agenda.
“Ending malnutrition requires more than food—it demands sustainable systems, strategic partnerships, and political commitment aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals,” said Dr. Sahil Singh, Ambassador for Strategic Partnerships and UNSDGs at IIMSAM IGO. “Through spirulina-based solutions and global cooperation, IIMSAM IGO is working to transform nutrition outcomes while supporting countries in building resilient, self-sustaining food systems.”
IIMSAM IGO also acknowledged the contributions of Mr. Asif Ayoob, Assistant Secretary-General and Chief of Protocol, for his role in strengthening diplomatic engagement and institutional coordination in support of the organization’s expanding global mandate.
