Be alert! Dangerous microplastics found in salt and sugar, research reveals
Microplastics have been found in all brands of salt and sugar sold in India, a research published on Tuesday claimed. The study also tested five types of sugar bought online and from local markets. Dangerous microplastics have been found in all brands of salt and sugar sold in India. This claim has been made in a study published on Tuesday. The study titled 'Microplastics in Salt and Sugar' conducted by environmental research organization Toxics Link, included 10 types of salt - including rock salt, sea salt and local raw salt.
Five types of sugar bought from markets tested
The study also tested five types of sugar bought online and from local markets. The study revealed the presence of microplastics in all the samples of salt and sugar, which were present in various forms including fibers, pellets, pieces. The size of these microplastics ranged from 0.1 mm to 5 mm.
Microplastics found
More microplastics were found in iodized salt in the form of multicolored thin fibers and films. Satish Sinha, Associate Director of 'Toxics Link', said, it is worrying that a significant amount of microplastics were found in all the samples of salt and sugar in our study. There is an urgent and extensive need for research on the health effects of microplastics on human health.
Harm to both health and environment
Microplastics can harm both health and the environment. These tiny plastic particles can enter the human body through food, water and air. Recent research has found microplastics in human organs such as lungs, heart, and even in breast milk and unborn babies.
