Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs said an "edged weapon" was used by the suspect, identified as Fabricio De-Zoysa. He has been accused of murder.
Stubbs said the deceased were Sri Lankan nationals who had recently come to Canada. He told that these include a 35 year old mother, 7 year old son, 4 year old daughter, 2 year old daughter and 2 1/2 month old baby girl.
One person admitted to hospital
When the first officers arrived at the home, a family member was outside and yelling for someone to call 911, the police chief said. Police had received two emergency calls at 10:52 pm. The person is seriously injured and admitted to hospital.
Wife and children lost their lives
The Sri Lankan High Commission in Ottawa confirmed that the victims were families of Sri Lankan citizens. The man survived, but his wife and children died, the High Commission said, adding that he was in touch with relatives in the country's capital, Colombo.
The accused will be produced in court later on Thursday.
Neighbor's statement
Just before 11pm, police received a call from the Barrhaven area. A suspect was arrested soon after and police said there was no longer any threat to anyone's safety. A neighbor, Don Pereira, said he met the family at a Halloween party at their Catholic elementary school.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's statement has also come out on the incident. "Our first reactions to this terrible violence are shock," he said. Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe called the news worrying for all residents of the city.
