Earthquake tremors in Mexico, people came out of their homes in panic; tsunami alert
A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off Mexico's southern Chiapas coast, prompting a tsunami warning.
A massive earthquake of 7.4 magnitude has occurred off the coast of Mexico's southern state of Chiapas, prompting a tsunami warning. The earthquake was so strong that buildings in Mexico's neighboring countries Guatemala and El Salvador shook.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred near the Mexican city of Puerto Madero and its epicenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) below ground.
Alert issued regarding tsunami
The US Tsunami Warning System warned after the earthquake that dangerous tsunami waves could occur in coastal areas within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicenter.
According to Reuters report, an eyewitness said that the earthquake in Guatemala City shook buildings and some people came out of their homes and came onto the streets.
Local media in Guatemala showed footage showing workers leaving a government building after security protocols were put in place. Another eyewitness told Reuters that the quake was also felt in El Salvador.
