Pankaj Udhas was born on 17 May 1951 in Jaitpur, Gujarat. He was the youngest of three brothers. Both his elder brothers Manhar and Nirmal Udhas were famous singers. These two brothers started singing in the Udhas family. After this, Pankaj Udhas also followed the footsteps of his brothers and started singing. He taught tabla for four years from Sangeet Natya Academy, Rajkot. After this, Pankaj Udhas taught the nuances of classical music singing from Master Navrang.

Pankaj Udhas got his first chance in Bollywood from the 1972 film Kaamna. On the advice of composer Usha Khanna, she was given the opportunity to sing in this film. The film was a flop but Pankaj Udhas's song was highly praised. But he got his real identity from the song 'Chithi Aayi Hai' from the 1986 film Sanam Dutt's film 'Naam'. He has since lent his spiritual voice to many films. Apart from this, he has also recorded many albums. Also sung the best ghazal. Padmashree Pankaj Udhas has given a new height to Indian music.

Pankaj Udhas was awarded the Padma Shri, the country's fourth highest civilian honor, in 2006 at the hands of the then President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam for his outstanding work. When Pankaj was announced to be given this honor, he had no idea about it. He explains that former Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh was among the millions of fans of his singing.
