RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das received the Governor of the Year Award, became the second Governor after Raghuram Rajan

Today is a proud day for Indians. Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das has been awarded the title of 'Governor of the Year' for the year 2023 by Central Banking in London. Central Banking is an international economic research journal.

Got award because of this

The Central Bank has given this award to Shaktikanta Das for managing inflation and efficiently handling India's banking system during crises like the Covid pandemic and global upheavals.

The central bank said the RBI governor has driven significant reforms, and ensured smooth management of world-leading payment innovations and led India through difficult times.

Recommended in March

The governor's name was recommended by the Central Bank for the award in March 2023 itself. He has been awarded the title for his leadership of the central bank during global turmoil and difficult circumstances.

He managed the Reserve Bank of India and the entire banking system during the COVID-19 pandemic, critical non-banking companies, the Russia-Ukraine war, etc. Shaktikanta Das led India through the Covid pandemic and the IL&FS crisis.

Became governor in 2018

Shaktikanta Das took over as the Governor of RBI on December 12, 2018. Months before his appointment, India's leading non-banking financial company (NBFC) went bankrupt due to lack of liquidity.

The collapse of NBFCs also exposed huge flaws in the business model of many mid-sized banks that were heavily dependent on NBFCs. Later, several other banks like the Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank were also closed.

Raghuram Rajan has also received the award
