USA: Women can no longer get abortion in Florida after 6 weeks, Governor Ron DeSantis signed the bill

Ban on abortion after 6 weeks

According to the bill introduced in Florida, women cannot get an abortion after 6 weeks, on the other hand, women can only get an abortion after 15 weeks if the health of the woman is at risk from the pregnancy. Along with this, women have also been given exemption in the bill that if a woman has become pregnant after being a victim of sexual harassment, then in such a situation also she can get an abortion within 15 days only.

White House criticized : -

The White House condemned the move. He said that this bill is against fundamental freedom and many American citizens do not agree with this Bill The ban will affect Florida's four million women of reproductive age because pregnancy is difficult to detect until six weeks into pregnancy, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement Thursday.

The rule was changed last year as well

Florida's Republican-dominated legislature passed the bill by a vote of 70 against 40. It was the second time in a year that Florida has cut the term for abortions. In April 2022, Governor Ron DeSantis shortened the abortion time in Florida. He reduced it from 24 to 15 weeks in April. However, there was no exception for sexual harassment or incest.

The bill will be implemented only after the decision of the Supreme Court

A bill restricting abortions after 6 weeks in Florida will not go into effect until the Florida Supreme Court rules on an appeal filed by several unions against the 15-week limit, arguing that the law violates the state confidentiality clause. DeSantis has introduced this bill to strengthen his credibility among Florida's conservative citizens as he may nominate in the 2024 presidential election in the US

What is the opinion of the supporters and critics of the bill?

There are supporters of this law introduced in Florida and on the other hand there are its critics. Supporters of the bill claim that it will protect the lives of innocent children. The democratic opposition and activists in favor of abortion rights say that the state should not interfere in private decisions, as this could put many women at risk. Sixty-four percent of Floridians believe abortion should be allowed in all or most cases, according to a poll by the non-profit Public Religion Research Institute.
