Wipro CEO On Moonlighting: There is a debate on 'Moonlighting' in the IT industry. Experts have their own arguments about whether this is right or wrong. Wipro Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Thierry Delaporte has said that it is okay to catch a small job with a job, but working for a competing company is a 'moral question', amid a debate over 'moonlighting' in the IT sector. .
What is Moonlighting?
When an employee does some other work in addition to his regular job, it is technically called 'Moonlighting'. Wipro had actually found 300 employees with jobs working with the rival organization and fired them from the company.
'No place for such an employee...'
Earlier, Wipro had reported a marginal drop in the dropout rate, saying it would pay 100 per cent 'variable pay' to 85 per cent of its employees. Wipro chairman Rishad Premji said last month that the company has no room for any employees who choose to work directly with rivals while on Wipro's payroll.
Company CEO said this
Wipro CEO Delaporte said in a press conference after the announcement of the results of the second quarter of the current financial year that the employees can not do any other work under the contract. "Employees joining the company are expected to dedicate time not only to Wipro, but also to themselves and their families," he said.
Working for a rival company Conflict of interest
Delaporte said, "While working with Wipro, it's okay to hold on to some other small job. But if you're working for a company that's in our business, it's a different matter. Working for a rival company is also a conflict of interest. He said, therefore, moonlighting is not a question of legality, but of morality. We do not believe that it is right to do two acts of conflict of interest.
Rishad Premji terms moonlighting a 'hoax'
Significantly, Rishad Premji has strongly criticized Moonlighting for some time and termed it as a 'hoax'. Apart from this, IT company Infosys also called moonlighting a 'moral' issue. However, the company has not yet taken action against any employee in this regard.
