Azim Premji University Alumni, Fawaz Jaleel’s Book To Be Made Into A Movie In 2023

In recent times, we have seen Indian production houses, be it Bollywood, Tollywood , Kollywood or other top industries taking a keen interest in adapting bestselling books into movies or web series. This trend saw an upward spike with the successes of productions like Sacred Games, Paatal Lok, The Great Indian Murder etc. This is a trend that Hollywood has seen with books like Gone Girl,  The Girl on the train, and Pride and Prejudice etc. 

While the literature industry faced a setback with Covid and decline in readership, there were some books that did exceedingly well in the past few years. Among them is Bangalore-based Indian author, Fawaz Jaleel’s book, Nobody Likes An Outsider ranked among the highest selling books of 2021 and 2022. While Indian Authors have time and again tried to catch hold of this trend, a very small percentage of books get picked to be adapted into films.  Fawaz Jaleel’s book rights have been acquired by Mumbai-based Grandiose Productions. The production house hasn’t yet clarified if the bestseller will be adapted into a film or web series. 

Nobody Likes An Outsider received positive reviews from book critics and audiences for its balance of fictional and non-fiction narrative while keeping the readers on the edge with a nail-biting murder mystery. The book was criticised by a section of people for its take on religion and upset a few clerics especially for its unconventional ending. However, these didn’t affect the sales as the larger audience sentiment was in favour of the story and its journey and  Fawaz Jaleel went on to be one of the bestselling Indian thriller writers. The book is the first among the Yohan Tytler Investigative series. There were reports in the media confirming a sequel and that seems to be on the cards considering the book rights acquisition. Fawaz Jaleel is a former consultant to the government of India and a marketing strategist based out of Bangalore. He is an alumnus of Madras Christian College and Azim Premji University.
