Secretary General Guterres arrived in Pakistan today on a 2-day visit amidst the dire situation created by the floods in Pakistan.
Pakistan stricken by devastating floods
About two weeks ago, Pakistan appealed for US$160 million to help those affected by the unprecedented rains and floods. The floods have killed about 1,350 people across the country and have submerged a third of Pakistan since early June. The US$160 million sought by the Pakistan government will provide food, water, emergency education, security and health assistance to 5.2 million people.

Antonio Guterres tweeted after arriving in Pakistan, 'I am here to express my deep solidarity with the Pakistani people after the devastating floods.' He said that we appeal to the international community to come forward to help the flood-hit Pakistan. Pakistani Deputy Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar welcomed Guterres and will now meet Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
Flood affected areas
The UN Secretary-General will also visit the National Flood Response and Coordination Center (NFRCC). He will hold a joint press briefing with the Prime Minister and will hold talks with the External Affairs Minister. This will be followed by a joint press stakeout at the Foreign Office. Guterres will also visit areas most affected by the floods, including Balochistan and Sindh, where he will first meet those involved in rescue operations and interact with people displaced by the floods.
Let us tell you that a third of Pakistan has been affected by the floods and lakhs of people have been made homeless from their homes. According to government figures, more than 33 million people have been affected by the floods.
