Myanmar: Aung San Suu Kyi sentenced to 6 years in jail, convicted in corruption case

Myanmar's Nobel laureate and pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced on Monday to six years in prison by a court in military-ruled Myanmar after being found guilty on four counts.  Myanmar's 77-year-old ousted leader has been charged with at least 18 crimes ranging from corruption to election violations, with a combined maximum prison sentence of nearly 190 years, according to Reuters news agency.  However, Suu has called all the allegations baseless and absurd.

Sources told Reuters news agency that on Monday he was found guilty of misappropriating funds from the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation, a health and education organisation.  Please tell that Suu Kyi has been kept in solitary confinement in a prison in Naipitaw, the capital of Myanmar.  He has already been sentenced to 11 years in prison in other cases.

The army had done a coup

Suu Kyi's house was arrested in Myanmar on the night of 1 February 2021 in a coup by the army.  Military leader General Min Aung Huling has since served as the country's prime minister.  However, General Min Aung Huling had said that the emergency would be ended in 2023.  Simultaneously, general elections will also be held.  Let us tell that after the coup, about 940 people were killed in the violence between people of democratic ideology and the army.

Know what were the charges against Aung Soon Suu

General elections were held in Myanmar in November 2022.  In this election, Aung Soon Suu Kyi's party won 396 seats in both houses.  At the same time, Myanmar's main opposition party won only 33 seats but this party had the support of the army.  After the results came, the army raised questions on the voting and election process.  Soon Kyi and his party were accused of election rigging by the military, and the military eventually staged a coup in Myanmar.
