In Britain, rapid decisions are being taken one after another. Meanwhile, Britain's privacy watchdog, the Information Commissioner's Office, has launched an investigation into how TikTok, Reddit and online image sharing website Imgur protect children's privacy.
The social media company uses algorithms to prioritize content and keep users engaged. However, the fact is that they increase similar content, which can have a wrong impact on children due to the increasing amount of content.

Investigation of social media platforms including Reddit

The watchdog said that it is investigating how ByteDance's short-form video-sharing platform TikTok uses personal information of children aged 13-17 to suggest content in its feed. Social media platforms Reddit and Imgur are being investigated as to how they assess the age of the child using it.

The Information Commissioner will take action

The Information Commissioner's Office said in a statement, "If we find sufficient evidence that any of these companies have broken the law, we will talk to them about it and seek their views before reaching a final conclusion." TikTok, Reddit and Imgur did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

Britain has also passed the law before

Britain has previously passed legislation that sets strict rules for social media platforms, including for them to prevent children from accessing harmful and age-inappropriate content by implementing age limits and age-checking measures.
Social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok are required to tame their algorithms to filter or downgrade harmful content to help protect children under proposed British measures published last year.
