HCL Technologies chairperson Roshni Nadar Malhotra has retained her position as the richest woman in India with a 54 per cent increase in her net worth to Rs 84,330 crore in 2021.  According to the Kotak Private Banking-Hurun list published on Wednesday, Falguni Nair, who quit her investment banking career nearly a decade ago to start beauty products brand Nykaa.  Falguni Nair has emerged as the richest self-made woman with a net worth of Rs 57,520 crore.

According to the report, 59-year-old Nair saw a 963 percent increase in her wealth and became the second richest self-made woman, surpassing 40-year-old Malhotra, daughter of HCL Technologies founder Shiv Nadar.  At the same time, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of Biocon saw a 21 percent drop in her wealth and has become the third richest woman in the country with a net worth of Rs 29,030 crore.  The list of 100 women has only three Indian women, defined as born or raised in India, actively managing their businesses or self-made.

The cumulative wealth of these 100 women has increased by 53 per cent in a year to Rs 4.16 lakh crore in 2021 from Rs 2.72 lakh crore in 2020 and they now contribute 2 per cent to India's nominal GDP.  The cut-off to make it to the top-100 has increased to Rs.300 crores from the earlier Rs.100 crores and the top-10 cut-off is Rs.6,620 crores, which is 10 per cent higher than the previous year.

The highest number of entries in this list, 25, are from the Delhi-National Capital Region.  It is followed by Mumbai (21) and Hyderabad (12).  Kanika Tekriwal (33 years) of Bhopal-based JetSetGo is the youngest woman on the list with a 50 per cent increase in her assets to the tune of Rs 420 crore.  The list also includes three professional managers and is headed by Indra Nooyi, who was associated with PepsiCo with assets of Rs 5,040 crore.
