China Coronavirus Update: Two Chinese women who took part in historic demonstrations against Corona restrictions in Beijing were released today by the administration. Both were released after nearly four months in custody for calling for an end to COVID-19 restrictions.

Both played a key role in the largest protests in a decade when President Xi Jinping came to power, helping to end COVID restrictions.

Charge of inciting violence

Close friends of the two women told Reuters the protests began in late November in several cities across China. Sources told Reuters that he was taken into custody by police within days of the demonstration.

Human Rights Watch reported that the two women were among four protesters detained in December and charged with "fighting and inciting violence", which carries a sentence of up to five years.

Cao released the video

China's Ministry of Security and the Beijing Public Security Bureau have yet to comment or respond to the case. He also did not comment on the earlier detention. Shortly before being taken into custody, one of the women, 'Kao', made a video of herself asking for help. The clip was later released by friends and widely circulated online. In which there was talk of forcible arrest by the police.

Zero COVID policy was opposed

There was a large-scale protest against several restrictions including the government's Zero COVID policy on Corona in China. Hundreds of people took to the streets across the country and many burned posters as a symbol of their discontent. After this the police interrogated and detained dozens of people.
