Colonial Pipeline: Emergency after major cyber attack in US, FBI investigating agency in action

Emergency and FBI on US Colonial Pipeline: The US government has declared a state of emergency after a cyber attack on the country's largest fuel company, the Colonial Pipeline. Now the supply of fuel from here will be by road rather than pipeline. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the investigating agency in the case, told Twitter on Sunday that it was aware of the problems in the network of the Colonial Pipeline. The agency has stated that it came to know about this on Friday itself and its agents are 'working with the company and government partners'.

Every day 2.5 million barrels of oil are discharged from the Colonial Pipeline. This company supplies fuels such as diesel and gas throughout the East Coast. There was a cyber attack on the pipeline on Friday (Cyber Attack on US Pipeline) and since then it is being repaired. People aware of the matter say that due to this, fuel shortages will increase by two to three percent from Monday. But if it is not fixed quickly, the effect can be seen on a large scale as well.

Who has attacked

According to media reports, several sources have confirmed that the ransomware attack was carried out by a gang of cybercriminals called Darkside. They had made a dent in its network on Thursday and then took at least 100 GB of data in their possession. Then these hackers also locked the data of some computers and servers and started demanding ransom on the same day. They even threatened to leak the data on the Internet if the money was not given.

What did the company say?

At the same time, the Colonial Pipeline Company says that it is in touch with police, cyber security experts and the Department of Energy for the restoration of its services. The company says that its main pipeline work is at a standstill and only a few small lines are working which go from the terminal to the delivery point. The company said that it had cut some lines of its system soon after the attack. Now fuel like oil and gas will be sent to New York via tanker. But their capacity will be less as compared to pipeline.
