The planned G20 meeting between British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Chinese President Xi Jinping has been cancelled. Scheduling is said to be the reason behind this. This information was given by a Downing Street spokesman on Wednesday.

Schedule emergency meeting

This schedule of the ongoing summit in Bali, Indonesia went awry due to the emergency meeting. The meeting was held suddenly following two deaths from rockets hitting Polish territory close to the Ukrainian border. The first meeting between the heads of Britain and China was to take place after about 5 years. Sunak's office had earlier said that the prime minister's emphasis was on building a constructive relationship with China.

Chinese investment is a threat to Britain's security

Relations between London and Beijing deteriorated significantly during the last decade. Britain even warned about Chinese investment. It had said that Chinese investment in the country is a threat to Britain's security. London also condemned Beijing's business activities and human rights record in Hong Kong and Xinjiang.

In a statement released ahead of the planned meeting, Downing Street said the challenges posed by China are long-term. The statement said, 'China's views do not match with our original views. At the same time, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning has said that he had not received any information about the cancellation of the meeting between the two top leaders Xi and Sunak.
