61-year-old footage of John F. Kennedy's assassination auctioned for $137,000

A footage of former US President John F. Kennedy's assassination has been sold for US $137,500. This footage is of when he was being rushed to the hospital on the Dallas freeway in a convoy of vehicles after being shot.

According to news agency AP, the 8 mm color home film was offered by RR Auction in Boston. The auction company has said that the buyer has expressed his wish not to be named. According to the information, this film is with the family of a person named Dale Carpenter Senior, who recorded it on November 22, 1963.

Convoy footage captured on camera

The footage captures the limousine carrying the President and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy along with other vehicles of the convoy moving towards the city from Lemon Avenue. The film shows the story after Kennedy was shot.

The auction company's executive vice president Bobby Livingston said in a news release that the film provides an entertaining sense of urgency and heartbreak. Carpenter's grandson, James Gates, said it was known in his family that his grandfather had film of that day, but it wasn't often talked about.

Video not made public

Gates said when the film, stored with other family films, was finally given to him, he wasn't sure exactly what his grandfather, who died in 1991 at age 77, had captured. Projecting it on his bedroom wall around 2010, Gates was at first disappointed by the footage of Lemmon Avenue, but then, footage of I-35 flashed before his eyes. 'It was shocking,' he said. The auction company has released still photos from the portion of the film showing the race on I-35, but it is not releasing video of that portion publicly.
