Hong Kong protests: A pro-democracy media tycoon was sentenced on Saturday to five years and nine months in prison on two charges of fraud related to the lease agreement. A Hong Kong court also fined media tycoon Jimmy Lai $257,000.

Editors and journalists were also arrested

Jimmy Lai's media company Next Digital publishes the pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily. The publication was forced to shut down last year following the arrests of its top executives, editors and journalists. At the same time, China had termed Jimmy a riot supporter and his newspaper was accused of hatred and criticism of the governments of Hong Kong and China. Jimmy Lai is considered a staunch supporter of the ongoing democracy movement in Hong Kong. 

These allegations against Jimmy

A Hong Kong court ruled on Saturday that Jimmy Lai violated lease agreements with the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corp. On the other hand, Jimmy has denied all the allegations leveled against him. On 25 October this year, Jimmy was found guilty of two counts of fraud relating to breach of lease regulations. Explain that these allegations were leveled against Jimmy Lai with the aim of punishing him for his past activism. 

The arrest took place in the year 2019

In 2019, Jimmy Lai was arrested under the national security law imposed by Beijing following widespread protests as part of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. He is already serving a 20-month sentence for his role in the unauthorized gatherings. The court sentenced Wong Wai-kyung, a former associate of Jimmy's, who was convicted in the case on the same charge of fraud, to 21 months in prison.
