At least 17 migrants were killed when a bus crashed in Mexico's central state of Puebla. Officials gave this information on Monday. According to Puebla state interior secretary Julio Huerta, all of the deceased were migrants, including people from Venezuela, Colombia and Central America.
Huerta said the accident happened on Sunday on a highway going through the southern state of Oaxaca. He said that it appears that the migrants were traveling without proper documents.
15 died on the spot
Of the 45 passengers, 15 died on the spot, and two others died in hospital. Five were hospitalized and in critical condition, and eight others apparently had injuries that were not life-threatening.
Use trucks and buses to travel through Mexico
Huerta said all the migrants were adults. Migrants often use trucks and buses to travel through Mexico to reach the US border. Because they are often crammed into unsafe, illegal or clandestine transport, accidents are not uncommon.
In 2021 a truck carrying migrants overturned on a highway near the southern city of Tuxtla Gutierrez, killing 56 people.
